As different as the shape of the female breast is, so too are women's nipples. However, not everyone is happy with the appearance of their nipples. Some women find so-called inverted nipples in particular, but also particularly large areolas, unattractive and would like to correct them. Nipple correction of this kind is generally possible thanks to plastic surgery.

Dr. Schumacher will be happy to advise you in his practice in Mannheim on the possibilities of adapting the size, shape or position of your nipples to your wishes through surgery.

Frequently asked questions about nipple correction in Mannheim

The term nipple correction (medical term: nipple correction) refers to a surgical procedure to change the size or shape of the nipples. In many cases, nipple correction is desired for aesthetic reasons, for example because the nipples are perceived as too large. This may have genetic reasons or have changed as a result of pregnancy or breastfeeding. More rarely, it is medical reasons such as persistent pain or nipple dysfunction that make nipple correction necessary.

Yes, it is possible to reduce the size of the nipples or areolas. The doctor removes excess tissue and reshapes the nipple. As the incisions required for this are made on the nipples and areolas, they are barely visible and heal into very fine scars, which are also almost invisible later on.

Nipple correction aims to optimize the overall appearance of the breast and nipple to create a harmonious whole. Depending on what bothers you about the appearance of your nipples, different methods are used, which can also be combined if necessary. Basically, there are three main methods:

In a nipple reduction, it depends on whether the nipple itself or the areola is to be reduced. To reduce the size of the nipple, a wedge-shaped incision is made over the nipple and the excess tissue is removed. The surgeon then uses the remaining tissue to form a new nipple that meets the patient's wishes before carefully suturing the wound. Areola correction, on the other hand, requires an incision around the areola. The excess skin is removed through this circular incision, resulting in a minimal tightening of the breast, and the wound is then sutured.

To correct inverted nipples, the tissue strands must be cut through a short incision at the edge of the nipple. These ensure that the nipple is held under the skin. After the nipple has been cut, it straightens up again. It may be necessary to insert additional tissue. The suture gives it more support, which remains in place a few weeks after the stitches have been removed thanks to the scar tissue.

A nipple correction is generally suitable for all women and men who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their nipples. There are many reasons for this: For some, the nipples themselves or the areolas are too large, while others do not like their shape. In particular, so-called inverted nipples are often a reason for wanting a correction. Of course, nipple correction is also suitable for alleviating health problems caused by (for example, very overdeveloped) nipples.

Dr. Schumacher attaches great importance to individual treatment, which begins with a comprehensive personal consultation. Patients who come to his practice in Mannheim with the desire for a nipple correction will find out during this consultation which different methods are available and which procedure is best suited to them.

Depending on the initial condition of the nipple, Dr. Schumacher performs a nipple correction or a reduction of the nipple or areola and sutures the wound professionally. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis and takes about 1 hour. Afterwards, you can leave the practice in Mannheim, but you should take it easy physically over the next few days. It is also recommended that you wear a special bra or support bra to protect the breast and help the wound heal.

As the nipple correction itself is performed under at least local anesthesia (in some cases under general anesthesia), you will not feel anything from the procedure. However, you may experience slight pain afterwards, which can be easily treated with conventional painkillers.

After nipple correction, you should allow yourself some rest so that the surgical wounds can heal properly. You should wear a special bandage for the first 1-2 weeks and a support bra for about 2-4 weeks. Avoid physically strenuous activities such as sport during this time and then slowly start doing light exercises again.

As a surgical procedure, nipple correction is associated with certain general surgical risks such as post-operative bleeding, wound healing disorders or infections. Beyond this, however, nipple correction is considered a low-risk procedure, especially when performed by specialized surgeons with many years of experience. However, in very rare cases (especially when correcting inverted nipples), patients may lose the ability to breastfeed, which is why Dr. Schumacher recommends that patients in his practice only undergo nipple correction once family planning has been completed.
