Breast augmentation with implants has the advantage of being able to offer every woman an individual solution. With breast implants, a lasting aesthetic result can be achieved. Even before the procedure, the future breast shape and size can be predicted very well. High-quality breast implants also offer an enormous selection of sizes, volumes and shapes. This makes moderate to large breast augmentations possible.
The breast implants used by Dr. Schumacher meet the highest safety and quality standards. Silicone implants have been tried and tested for many years. Due to their elasticity and memory effect, they are often indistinguishable from a natural breast, even when palpated.
The positioning of the implant, under the muscle (submuscular) or over the muscle (subglandular), depends on personal wishes and individual physical conditions.
Taking into account the characteristics of the glandular and soft tissue, the access technique - via the nipple, in the underbust fold or via the armpit - depends on the shape and size of the natural breast, the implant size and the areola.
The incision is used to carefully create a cavity under the pectoral muscle or between the pectoral muscle and the mammary gland. Once the implants are optimally embedded and the breasts are shapely and laterally aligned, the incision is sutured using the finest scar technique.
Dr. Schumacher will be happy to explain the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods and which option might be best for you in a personal consultation at our practice in Mannheim.
The optimal access technique can be selected according to the characteristics of the glandular and soft tissue.
The approaches for breast implants at a glance
Access via the areola
The implant is inserted through a small incision in the nipple. The remaining scar is usually relatively small and remains inconspicuous on the naturally pigmented areola. A further advantage is the predominantly good scar healing on the areola. By accessing the areola, it is possible to optimize the underbust crease.
Access in the underbust fold
With this approach, an incision in the underbust fold is used to place the breast implant. Access via the underbust fold is also suitable for larger implants. The remaining scar is barely visible due to its position in the breast crease.
Access in the armpit
With this technique, an incision is made in the axillary fold. The breast implant is inserted using an endoscopic instrument. Access via the armpit is not suitable for every implant size.
The 8 breast forms at a glance
Every female breast is shaped differently. In addition to genetic and hormonal factors, the distribution of fat and connective tissue also has a major influence on breast shape. Below we present the most important shapes of the female breast:
The female breast is never exactly symmetrical in shape. However, some women have significant differences in breast shape or size. In this case, the treatment aims to align both sides and harmonize the overall breast shape.

In very athletic women, the fat content of the breast is often reduced. The breasts lose volume and therefore also their femininity. With the help of breast implants, we can restore the feminine curves in a targeted manner.

We speak of relaxed breasts when the connective tissue loses elasticity due to age or after pregnancy, for example. The breasts then begin to sag and the nipples point downwards. In this case, breast augmentation with implants is an option, possibly in combination with a breast lift.

Here, the breast is voluptuous and rounded in a feminine way. The center of volume is in the lower half of the breast. We generally advise against augmentation for full, heavy breasts. On the contrary, breast reduction is often the preferred option.

With this breast shape, the nipples point slightly outwards so that the breasts diverge in the middle. Breast augmentation can harmonize the overall appearance again. In addition to the breast shape, the position of the nipples is also corrected.

An evenly rounded breast corresponds to the ideal image of many women. It is particularly common in young women with firm connective tissue. Round breast implants can also be used to create a harmonious curve in other breast shapes.

This is characterized by a rather pointed shape, often in combination with oversized areolas. The areolas are located far down. The tubular breast is a breast malformation that can be corrected as part of a breast augmentation.

With this breast shape, the center of volume is below the nipples. The teardrop-shaped breast looks very natural and is therefore often sought after for breast augmentation.

Frequently asked questions about breast augmentation with implants in Mannheim
Breast implants differ in size, shape and curvature. In general, we distinguish between round implants and those with an anatomical curvature. With anatomically curved breast implants, the center of volume is in the lower half of the breast, which results in very natural results.
Before your breast augmentation, Dr. Schumacher will advise you in detail on the choice of implants. In Mannheim, it is very important to us that you feel completely comfortable with your new breasts. This is why the implants are selected together with you, taking your current breast shape into account.
Breast implants can be placed above or below the pectoral muscle. The implant is usually placed under the pectoral muscle, as it is less palpable here and also facilitates breast cancer screening examinations. If the glandular tissue is well developed, placement above the pectoral muscle is also an option. This method is less painful and easier to perform.

In a detailed consultation, you will be informed in detail about the possibilities of breast augmentation. Dr. Schumacher will discuss with you what currently bothers you about your breasts and which implant shape is best suited for your desired result. The further course of treatment will then be determined together with you.
The breast augmentation itself takes place under general anesthesia. Dr. Schumacher first makes the necessary skin incisions to insert the implants via the chosen access route. Depending on the individual situation, this is possible via the breast crease, armpit or areola. The implants are then positioned in the desired location and the skin incisions are then sutured using the finest scar technique. You will remain with us overnight and can then return home after an initial follow-up check.
After breast augmentation, it is very important to take it easy physically so that your body can recover from the operation. In the initial period, you should sleep on your back if possible, avoid jerky arm movements and take a break from sport for at least 4 - 6 weeks.
After breast augmentation, you will wear a special support bra for a few weeks, which exerts even pressure on the breast and thus supports the treatment result.
It is also important that you avoid going to the solarium, swimming pools and sunbathing for at least 6 weeks. We recommend that you also use suitable UV protection after the healing phase. The surgical scars could become darker if they are exposed to the sun too early.
After breast augmentation in Mannheim, you should allow for a downtime of around 1 - 2 weeks. Light activities without physical exertion can be resumed after just one week. You should take a break from sport for at least 4 - 6 weeks, depending on the type of sport you practise.
Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation is associated with some general surgical risks. In rare cases, for example, post-operative bleeding, wound healing disorders or infections may occur after the operation. However, initial swelling or occasional bruising is completely normal and usually only of short duration.
A specific risk of breast augmentation with implants is capsular fibrosis. This is a rejection reaction in the form of tissue hardening. Depending on its severity, it may be necessary to remove or replace the implants. However, with modern implant models and surgical techniques, we can significantly reduce the risk of capsular fibrosis.
In principle, the durability of modern breast implants is unlimited. The implants only need to be replaced in the event of complications or if you are no longer satisfied with your breast shape at a later date. In this case, we will be happy to advise you in Mannheim on an implant replacement or a new breast augmentation.
